“Camp is the best week of the year as well as the hardest for the heart-strings…”

I have been involved with Royal Family KIDS Camp since 2016. I knew from the very first time I heard about this camp for abused and neglected children in the foster care system that I wanted to be a part of it.

My first year I had two campers and had no idea what was in store for me. One night when I was putting a camper to bed, she asked me to pray for her and her family because they were hurting. This child also shared a really hard story that had happened, and it broke me. I prayed to God and said, “God, please tell me how I can help these children and advocate for them.”

Camp finished and it was one of the hardest goodbyes not knowing where the campers were going or if they would be okay. I remember struggling for weeks after camp, and I kept praying to God, “What can I do?” One day, I realized that I needed to work in the field of social work and work with foster children daily. I started working and knew that my calling was to advocate for the children that don’t have a voice.

This camp is what brought me to my dream career of helping children in need. Camp is the best week of the year as well as the hardest for the heart strings, but it is a real-life glimpse of what children go through, as well as getting a glimpse of how “normal” can be and what love feels like, some for the first time. I know my life has been changed as a result of helping at Royal Family KIDS Camp.
